Puritan Punishments

Though puritans thought of themselves as moral and religious there were many crimes that occurred in those times. In colonial America, the troublemakers were punished in the center of town for the entire public to see. They served their time while the town people scoffed at them. The puritans liked to humiliate people. Their punishments all took place with large crowds watching and jeering.
The convicted could plead benefit of clergy, in which case, if they can read a passage from the Bible without one mistake, their sentence will be reduced.
